On day two at the athletics stadium of the Dubai Club for People of Determination the 30-year-old, winner of three golds at Beijing 2008 and a further two at London 2012, set the fastest time in the men’s T38 100 metres.

He crossed the line in 11.56sec to finish first in a nine-strong field.

Taking second place, more than half-a-second behind was Abbas Al-Darraji from Iraq in 12.18 and Tunisia’s Mohamed Farhat Chida finished third in 12.17.

He is more of a 400m specialist, having won two Paralympic gold medals in the one lap event, also at Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

In all, 100m races went ahead in nine different categories meaning the shortest event dominated the track action.

Others to pick up wins were Malaysia’s Muhama Mohamad Ali Hanafiah, who set the fastest time in the T11/12 races in 11.48, and another Australian, Chard Perris, who ran 11.35 in the T13 event.

In the T44/62 races, Thailand gained a winner through Asian Para Games bronze medallist Denpoom Kotcharang and Lithuania’s Danas Sodaitis won the T46 event, who ran times of 12.35 and 11.52 respectively.

Seven races also went ahead at 800m, from which the standout performance perhaps came from Great Britain’s Paul Blake.

The Rio 2016 Paralympic champion over 400m won the T36 800m race by almost seven seconds, in 2min 10.71sec.

That saw him finish ahead of Algeria’s Sid Ali Bouzourine, and Kazakhstan’s Bagdat Yelibayev, who finished way back in 2:40.28.

Shot put dominated the field events with Sweden’s Jeffrey Ige putting in a strong performance to win the F11/20 event with a throw of 15.41 metres, beating Syria’s Ali Asaad by almost five metres.

In the women’s action, several Paralympic medallists were also in action, with Britain's Rio 2016 T38 100m champon Sophie Hahn winning once again in that event in 13.52.

Australia's three-time Paralympic silver medallist Madison de Rozario triumphed in the T53 800m in 1:58.78 in race where she was the only athlete to break two minutes.
