October 13 - One of the world’s greatest judo stars has thrown his weight behind the Annecy bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Teddy Riner (pictured) four times a world heavyweight and openweight champion, said: "I found the Annecy 2018 approach particularly appealing, as it is a project driven by athletes, for athletes.

"The Annecy 2018 project puts the focus on sporting champions, an initiative which, in my opinion, is essential, as it is they who are best qualified to ensure Olympic competitors are given the best possible conditions to excel in their various disciplines."

The 2008 Olympic bronze medallist was in Haute Savoie for the official opening of the Pays de Savoie judo club in Rumilly where he took part in a judo demonstration day with the public.

Riner is a favourite with the fans, who appreciate his very accessible attitude, and his popularity is ever-growing, especially since his recent success at the Tokyo World Championships, where he won his fourth consecutive title.

Edgar Grospiron, himself an Olympic Champion and chief executive of Annecy 2018, said: "I am delighted to hear that Teddy Riner is backing the bid.

"At just 21 years old, Teddy well and truly belongs to that category of French champions who have marked the history of their sports.

"With his natural charisma and his sporting record, he is truly emblematic of France as a nation of sport and champions, bringing with him an international recognition which is essential for a successful Olympic bid."
