Reading to host 2019 IFBB English Grand Prix

Reading will host the fifth edition of the International Federation of Fitness and Bodybuilding (IFBB) English Grand Prix this year.

Action will take place in the Berkshire city between June 21 and 23 at The Hexagon.

The tournament will be organised by the United Kingdom Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation, chaired by William Tierney.

Tierney is also the general secretary of the IFBB.

This year, the English Grand Prix will serve as an international competition for the first time.

All IFBB nations are eligible to compete, with the event a pro qualifier providing elite pro cards.

Bodybuilding, classic physique, men's physique, muscular men's physique, bodyfitness, wellness and bikini categories will all be contested.

There is capacity for more than 1,600 fans at The Hexagon.

Registration and accommodation for the event will be at the Premier Inn.

When British skaters Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean won the Olympic gold medal in ice dance at Sarajevo 1984 with 12 perfect 6.0s from every judge, for their interpretation of Maurice Ravel's Boléro, an important member of their team was singer-actor Michael Crawford. Crawford, who had played Frank Spencer in British sitcom Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em and the title role in the musical The Phantom of the Opera, had become a mentor to the pair in 1981 and went on to help them create their Olympic routine. Crawford said he “taught them how to act". He was present with their trainer Betty Callaway at the ringside at Sarajevo as they created one of the most iconic moments in Olympic history.
