China's Xu Mengtao moved a step closer to clinching the overall women's International Ski Federation Aerials World Cup title as Laura Peel of Australia produced a superb performance to take victory on Shimao Lotus Mountain.

Xu, the Sochi 2014 Olympic silver medallist, scored 81.07 points in the penultimate event of the season.

She now has a total of 310 points in the race for the aerials crystal globe, which she is hoping to secure for the third season in a row.

Xu Sicun is second in the race for the overall crown in the discipline after she finished second today.

The Chinese athlete and Ashley Caldwell of the United States both scored 81.78, with Xu taking the silver medal by virtue of completing a better jump.

Peel, the 2015 world champion, remains in contention to seal the crystal globe following her dominant triumph today, where she scored a huge 96.58 points.

The Australian has 230 points and lies in third behind the two Chinese skiers.

"We have some tough conditions out there," said Peel, according to Chinese news agency Xinhua.

"So I was really grateful for my coach for putting me in the right spot all day and really happy that I was able to keep my nerve under control and compete how I wanted to."

Chinese youngster Sun Jiaxu earned his first World Cup victory as he won the men's event with a score of 126.11 points.

Wang Xidi, the current overall leader, was second after his routine was rewarded with 125.22, just 0.89 shy of his team-mate.

Wang is 30 clear of Russia's Maxim Burov in the battle for the overall title as he now has 260 points.

Eric Loughran of the United States did enough for third with 123.45 points.

The Aerials World Cup season concludes tomorrow at the same venue, located at Secret Garden in China, which will host Olympic events at Beijing 2022.
