The Japanese star returned to the top of the podium following her success in the solo technical competition as she scored 91.7667 at the Aquatic Centre Maurice Thorez.

Inui's display saw her finish narrowly ahead of Ukraine's Marta Fiedina, who finished second with 91.0000 points.

Eve Planeix of France looked set to claim silver but was usurped by Fiedina and took bronze on 84.9667.

"Paris is the first stage of the World Series 2019 so it is always good to leave a mark at the beginning of the season," said Planeix.

"There is still a lot of work to be done because this morning was the first time I was presenting this routine in a competition context. 

"I am pretty happy with it though."

Japan also reigned supreme in the duet mixed free final, scoring 87.4667 to deny Spain the gold medal.

The Spanish team were forced to settle for silver on 83.9667, while bronze went to Brazil.

Ona Carbonell, who missed out on solo technical glory yesterday, led Spain to victory in the highlight routine, a non-Olympic event.

The Spanish squad earned 89.9667 points for their performance as they condemned France to second place on 87.7000.

Israel rounded off the podium with 81.7667.

The competition in the French capital concludes tomorrow.
