The first World Team Trophy in cue sports is underway in Roissy-en-France near Paris, with a new format of competition involving men and women competing in snooker, carom and pool.

The event is being jointly organised by the World Confederation of Billiards Sports (WCBS) - the umbrella organisation for the three cue sports - the French Federation and the Billiards 2024 organisation.

The format, according to the organisers, is meant to prefigure "the 2021 World Games, and possibly future Olympic Games".

The WCBS was founded in 1992 with the aim of introducing cue sports to the Olympic programme.

Recognised by the International Olympic Committee in 1998, the organisation has attempted - so far without success - to gain entry to the Games.

News last month that the Paris 2024 organisers had identified breakdancing, climbing, skateboarding and surfing as the four proposed additional sports for their Games was greeted with disappointment in WCBS circles.

The billiards 2024.paris site describes a sense of "unfairness", with co-ordinator Jean-Pierre Guiraud saying: "We are of course very surprised with the decision to blow the final whistle a few months short, but we are proud of our amazing campaign and we plan to build from all the positive waves it has created across the globe."

In the men's competition Europe defeated France 4-0, and the Rest of the World beat Asia 2-0.

In the women's competition Europe beat the hosts 2-0, while Asia earned a 4-2 win over the Rest of the World.

Competition is being shown on the Olympic Channel.
