Australia’s Penny Smith finished first on the opening day of women’s trap qualification at the International Shooting Sport Federation Shotgun World Cup in Acapulco.

Smith managed 73 points in the Mexican seaside resort.

San Marino’s Alessandra Perilli, China’s Wang Xiaojing and Finland’s Satu Makela-Nummela achieved the same total in ranking second, third and fourth, respectively.

Italians Maria Lucia Palmitessa and Mélanie Couzy were among five shooters who managed 72 points alongside France’s Mélanie Couzy, Canada’s Amanda Chudoba-Obrigewitch and China’s Deng Weiyun.

Qualification is due to continue tomorrow and will be followed by the final in the evening.

Men’s trap qualifying is scheduled to begin tomorrow and is set to conclude on Tuesday (March 19).
