Germany's Max Hartung overcame world number one Eli Dershwitz in the quarter-final of the International Fencing Federation (FIE) Men's Sabre World Cup on his way to gold in Budapest. 

Hartung is ranked number eight in the world but beat two fencers in the top five to triumph at Ludovika Aréna in Budapest. 

The German defeated American Dershwitz 15-12 in the quarter-finals, before beating Romania's Tiberiu Dolniceanu 15-5 in the semis.

He then won 15-12 against the world number three, Oh Sang-uk of South Korea, in the final.

There was success for France in the two women's World Cup events taking place today.

Helene Ngom was victorious in the Epee World Cup in Chengdu, defeating Italy's Rossella Fiamingo 15-12.

She had beaten China's Zhu Mingye 15-7 and America's Courtney Hurley 15-11 en route to the final.

Ngom's compatriot Manon Brunet then triumphed in the Sabre World Cup in Sint-Niklaas.

She narrowly defeated the competition's top seed, Olga Nikitina of Russia, 15-14 to win the event.

She had overcome Russia's Anna Bashta 15-9 in the quarter-final, beating another Russian, Yana Egorian, 15-13 in the semis.
