After Julia Gaffney yesterday set a world record in the women’s 100 metres backstroke S7, three-time Paralympic champion Becca Meyers today laid down two Pan American records at Indiana University Natatorium.

The 24-year-old started as she meant to go on, setting a record in the women’s 50m freestyle S12 in 29.23sec, before charging to another in the 100m breaststroke SB12.

She finished that event in 1:20.98.

“[It] feels really good,” she said.

“Training has been going well.

“I’ve been working on a lot of sprinting, so I was excited to be able to execute that today.

“I’m really pleased with both of my times.”

Only one other swimmer took part in the 50m freestyle as Aspen Shelton finished in 31.52, while in the breaststroke Meyers was the only athlete competing.

Other records were set amid more competitive fields, however, among them one from Lawrence Sapp in the men’s 100m breaststroke Sb14.

He finished his preliminary race in 1:19.29 for a new American record, but then lost in the final to compatriot Tyler Austin.

In that race Austin triumphed in 1:19.58, while Sapp touched the wall in 1:20.28 and another US swimmer, Jacob Basini, was third in 1:20.92.

Meanwhile, in a final featuring eight swimmers, Samantha Tubbs broke her American record in the women’s 100m breaststroke SB9 event, setting a time of 1:22.63.

That saw her beat China’s Yi Chen, who finished in 1:24.78 and yet another US swimmer, Mikaela Jenkins, who managed 1:26.85.
