Egypt’s Esraa Rashed triumphed in front of a home crowd at the African Weightlifting Championships in Cairo.

The home lifter impressed in the snatch event as part of the women’s under 62 kilogram competition at the Cairo Stadium.

Rashed lifted 98kg to top the standings in the discipline.

She was forced to settle for second place in the clean and jerk event as her effort of 110kg was just one kilogram shy of her team-mate Nima Fahmi.

But Rashed still clinched the overall title with her total of 208kg.

Fahmi ended as the runner-up on 202kg.

The podium was completed by Tunisia’s Ihsan Shabi.

There was also success in the men’s 81kg event for Rio 2016 Olympic bronze medallist Mohamed Ihab, a four-time World Championships medallist.

The 29-year-old Egyptian, crowned world champion back in 2017, lifted 160kg in the snatch event.

He followed the effort with a lift of 191kg in the clean and jerk, giving him a winning total of 351kg.

Tunisia's Ramzi Bahloul was second on 331kg, while Egypt’s Ahmed Sayed placed third on 281kg.
