Olympic women's champions Sweden fell to their second successive defeat at the inaugural Curling World Cup Grand Final in Beijing today.

After an opening day 5-4 loss to South Korea, the Pyeongchang 2018 gold medallists, skipped by Anna Hasselborg, were beaten 6-2 by the Swiss team skipped by Silvana Tirinzoni that beat them to the world title in Silkeborg in Denmark six weeks ago.

Japan’s Team Satsuki Fujisawa, winners of the second of this season’s World Cups in Omaha, registered their first win in Beijing with a tight victory over United States’ Team Nina Roth, defeating their Group A rivals 7-5 at Shougang Arena.

Canada’s Team Jennifer Jones were made to work hard for their second win by home favourites Team Yilun Jiang.

A number of timely shots made by skip Jiang pushed the former Olympic champions, but the Canadians stayed firm as they ran China out of stones to win 4-1 in a low-scoring affair.

Team Anna Sidorova of Russia held their nerve to gain their first success in Beijing – two years on from their world silver medal in the city – as they beat South Korea 7-5.

But while Sweden's women were struggling, their world champion men recovered their equilibrium following the opening day defeat to the hosts. 

Four-time world champions Team Niklas Edin responded with victories over Canada and United States on their second day in action.

The Swedes defeated Canada’s Team Matt Dunstone and Team John Shuster of the United States 5-4 and 5-2 respectively.

Team Kevin Koe, the second Canadian rink, also had a perfect day, beating Norway 5-4 and Scotland’s Team Paterson 9-2.

Norway and United States maintained their perfect record in the mixed doubles events after registering two wins on day two to top their respective groups.

In a repeat of their final at the second of the three preceding World Cups in Omaha, the US pairing of Sarah Anderson and Korey Dropkin gained revenge as they battled past Laura Walker and Kirk Muyres of Canada to win 8-7 in the first session of the day.

The American duo then beat hosts China - Cao Chang and Yuan Mingjie - 13-4.

Norway’s Magnus Nedregotten and Kristen Skaslien built on their fine victory on day on by producing a controlled display to beat Russia’s Maria Komarova and Daniil Goriachev 10-3 in the opening session.

The Norwegian pair went on to beat Switzerland’s 2018 world champions Michele Jaeggi and Sven Michel 7-6, despite being down 3-1 at the fourth end.
