Australia’s Mathew Belcher and Will Ryan top the open standings following the first day of competition at the 470 European Sailing Championship on Marina degli Aregai in Italy.

The Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallists won all three yellow group races to finish on two net points.

Austria’s David Bargehr and Lukas Mähr rank second with three points, while Spain’s Jordi Xammar and Nicolas Rodriguez are third with four.

Completing the top three in the European standings are Greece’s Panagiotis Mantis and Pavlos Kagialis with five points.

They are fourth overall.

In the women’s standings, Great Britain’s Hannah Mills and Eilidh Mcintyre lead the way with two net points.

They had wins in the first and third races with their eighth-place finish in the second discarded.

Israel’s Gil Cohen and Noa Lasry are second with four net points, while France’s Camille Lecointre and Aloise Retornaz are third with six.

The trio of pairings also occupy the top three places in the European standings.
