ElShorbagy has been known to cause Farag problems in the past when the two players have faced each other on the PSA World Tour, leading the head-to-head with four wins to two.

But reigning world champion Farag ensured he lived up to his top-seed billing as he claimed an 11-8, 11-1, 11-2 victory in 31 minutes at the newly-renamed Allam Sport Centre.

"It’s a very big win," Farag said.

"To play Marwan in the last-16 is a lot of pressure.

"I’m really happy with the way I dealt with it and the first game could have gone either way.

"I think that made a psychological difference and I’m really happy with the way I pushed on after that."

Awaiting Farag in the quarter-finals is another Egyptian Mohamed Abouelghar, who defeated France's Gregoire Marche 12-10, 11-2, 11-2.

Also tasting victory today in the men's event was Egypt's Mazen Hesham, an 11-4, 11-6, 4-11, 11-7 winner at the expense of France's Lucas Serme.

Next up for him is New Zealand's Paul Coll after the fourth seed overcame Egypt's Fares Dessouky 11-5, 11-7, 9-11, 11-5. 

In the women's event, Egypt's Raneem El Welily was in spellbinding form as she booked her place in the last eight with a 12-10, 11-6, 11-6 win over the United States' Amanda Sobhy.

El Welily has won her last three tournaments and she certainly laid down a marker in her quest to add the prestigious PSA British Open title to her expanding collection.

This is the third tournament in a row that the 30-year-old has beaten Sobhy, producing another dominant performance to show why she is world number one.

"It was very important to take the first," El Welily said.

"I gave her an opening and she took it right away. 

"I was leading that first game and then all of a sudden she was 10-7 up.

"I had to push myself to at least finish the game fighting until the end and then I guess that gave me the push that I needed to carry on the plan."

Standing between El Welily and a place in the last four is fellow Egyptian Nouran Gohar, who confidently defeated Hong Kong's Joey Chan 11-5, 11-8, 11-3.

Today's action also saw New Zealand’s Joelle King ease into her fifth PSA British Open quarter-final after overcoming England’s Alison Waters 11-4, 11-8, 11-6.

Next up for the fifth seed is Egyptian third seed Nour El Tayeb, who battled back from the brink of defeat to oust Hong Kong's Annie Au with an 11-13, 7-11, 11-9, 11-4, 13-11 victory.

Competition in Hull is due to continue tomorrow.

The remaining four last-16 ties in both the men's and women's events are scheduled to be held.
