Argentina scored twice in the last five minutes to defeat Germany 2-1 in the women's International Hockey Federation (FIH) Pro League in Krefeld.

Valentina Costa and Silvina D’Elia responded following Charlotte Stapenhorst's opener at Crefelder Hockey und Tennis Club.

Argentina now sit second in the Pro League standings thanks to an 83.33 win rate, with two games left to play.

The top four at the end of the season book a place at the Pro League Grand Final and the FIH Olympic qualifiers, leaving fifth-place Germany with work to do.

“It was a very difficult match”, said Argentina's Eugenia Trinchinetti.

“We are always training and trying to be better, so the three points are very important.

"We’ve changed our coach and everything is new, but we have to adapt and continue training a lot to be the best.”

It was an equally dramatic encounter in the men's clash, with the game going to a shootout.

Timm Herzbruch scored first for Germany, before captain Martin Häner extended the lead.

Leandro Tolini and Ignacio Ortiz then fired home in quick succession to bring the tie back to 2-2.

It had seemed as if Agustin Mazzilli had secured victory for Argentina in the final quarter, but Germany's Constantin Staib sent the match to a shootout with a last-gasp deflection.

Germany took the bonus point in the shootout through Niklas Wellen.

Both teams sit just outside of the top four, with Argentina fifth and Germany sixth.

The Pro League continues when China welcome Belgium to Changzhou on Saturday (May 25) in the women's competition.
