Antwan Tolhoek triumphed on the first mountain stage of the Tour de Suisse as the Dutch rider was the strongest on the 120 kilometres mountain stage from Einsiedeln to Flumserberg.

Tolhoek secured victory having part of a breakaway on the sixth stage of the International Cycling Union (UCI) WorldTour race.

The Team Jumbo–Visma rider had enjoyed a near two minutes advantage over the general classification contenders having been part of the breakaway earlier in the stage.

He finally crossed the line in a winning time of 2 hours 43min 34sec.

Team Ineos' Egan Bernal boosted his Tour de France hopes by ending as the fastest of the general classification contenders.

The Colombian ended 17 seconds down on the winner in second place,

France's François Bidard ended in third place in 2:43:58.

Bernal assumed the overall race lead following his performance, enjoying 12 second gap over second placed Rohan Dennis of Australia.

Patrick Konrad of Austria lies third overall at 29 seconds behind Bernal.

One of the key storylines of the day came with The Netherlands' Tom Dumoulin confirming he would miss next month's Tour de France.

The 28-year-old had suffered a injury last month which had rendered him as a doubt.

The Team Sunweb rider has now confirmed he not compete in the Grand Tour event, having failed to recover sufficiently.
