The Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF) have organised a national black belt programme at the newly-named Mashood Abiola Stadium in Abuja to mark Democracy Day.

NTF technical director Chika Chukwumerije reportedly told Tidesports sources the Federation was happy to be the country's first to organise activities at the stadium.

Chukwumerije, an Olympic bronze medallist in the men's over-80 kilograms at Beijing 2008, revealed activities included a national referees' workshop and a national black belt grading programme.

"The Federation will also organise a world taekwondo global membership system club administration course for Nigerian Taekwondo club owners," he told Tidesports.

"It will also organise the highly anticipated national seniors open trials."

Chukwumerije said registration for the events would be done through the Nigeria's World Taekwondo global membership system, the official database and portal of the NTF.

"More than 150 taekwondoists across the country are expected to participate in the various events," he said.

The formerly known National Stadium was renamed by President Muhammadu Buhari after the late politician and sports enthusiast.

Abiola won the 1993 presidential election in Nigeria which was annulled by General Ibrahim Babangida's military regime.

Democracy Day celebrates the military handing over power to an elected civilian Government in 1999, marking the beginning of the longest continuous civilian rule since Nigeria's independence from colonial rule in 1960.
