Egan Bernal was confirmed as the winner of the Tour de Suisse as Britain’s Hugh Carthy triumphed on the final stage of the race in Goms.

Bernal headed into the 144.4 kilometres stage in Goms with a 22-second cushion over second place Rohan Dennis of Australia.

While the focus was on the battle between the leading duo, Cathy produced a superb solo ride by breaking away with around 90km to go.

He enjoyed a near three-minute lead heading towards the final climb of the day, where his lead was slowly reduced.

Dennis and Colombia’s Bernal moved away from the main group as their duel continued, but neither were able to catch Cathy.

The EF Education First rider crossed the line in a winning time of 3 hours 01min 49sec.

He was followed by Dennis and Bernal, who crossed 62 seconds adrift of the stage winner.

It was enough for Bernal to retain his lead and seal the general classification at the International Cycling Union WorldTour race.

Dennis was forced to settle for second place, while Austria’s Patrick Konrad was 3min 04sec behind the winner in third place overall.

Despite securing the general classification, Team Ineos’ Bernal insisted he would ride the Tour de France in support of team-mate and defending champion Geraint Thomas of Britain.
