Annecy_2018_logoOctober 19 - A team of champions with 10 Olympic medals between them are on their way to Acapulco, Mexico, to fight Annecy's corner in the battle to host the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

Headed by Olympic champion and Annecy 2018 chief executive officer Edgar Grospiron, the delegation will present its plan to bring the Games to the Alps at the Association of National Olympic Committeess (ANOC) General Assembly on Friday (October 22).

Grospiron can count on the support of several great champions, including Perrine Pelen, Annecy 2018 Ambassador and triple Olympic medallist at the 1980 Lake Placid Games and the 1984 Sarajevo Games.

Jean-Pierre Vidal, President of the Annecy 2018 Sustainable Development and Environment Commission and Olympic slalom champion at the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City, is joined by Jean-Luc Rigaut, Mayor of Annecy and Wildwater Canoeing world champion in 1983, 1985 and 1991, and Denis Masseglia, president of the French National Olympic Committee and a former rowing international.

"The ANOC General Assembly is a key moment for our candidature," said Grospiron.

"It is a unique occasion to reveal our new, ultra-compact concept before the entire Olympic family - a concept oriented towards excellence in performance, which provides point-by-point answers to the International Olympic Committee's stringent requirements.

"We are delighted to be able to seize this opportunity to share our vision for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which will bring back the original spirit of the Winter Games at the birthplace of winter sports.

"I am particularly delighted with the way athletes have come out in favour of the Annecy 2018 project.

"They are on the front line, developing a project for athletes, leading it and presenting it to the Olympic family."

The new site plan which Annecy 2018 presented this month offers an ultra-compact concept for the Games, based around two main clusters - Annecy and Chamonix - just an hour apart, with a direct link by motorway and via the Olympic Train.

All the events, which will take place within a 33 kilometre radius, will be easily accessible from countries the world over, via Geneva airport, a mere 25 minutes away.

The ANOC General Assembly takes place from October 20-22 at the Fairmont Princess in Acapulco.

The three candidate cities for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games are Annecy, Munich and Pyeongchang, who will be presenting their bids to the ANOC.
