The latter side took a 5-1 lead in the third and although Brazil battled back to level at 22-22, Igor Kolaković’s men edged it 26-24.

Invigorated, Iran pushed on in the fourth and a pancake dig from Purya Fayazi helped them go 23-20 up, before they took the set.

However, in the tiebreaker Brazil held their nerve, a block from Yoandy Leal seeing them into the knockout phase.

The US defeated Russia 25-21, 25-17, 25-20 in a match which took place after both sides had ensured their spots in the last four.

Semi-final clashes are set to take place tomorrow, with the final and third-place playoff following on Sunday (July 14).
