The National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland (ISI) has paid tribute to its honorary member Fridjon B. Fridjonsson who has died at the age of 83.

Fridjonsson sat on the Board at the ISI for nearly 20 years between 1986 and 2004 and held the role of treasurer.

He played a key part in the development of Icelandic sport and volunteered at the Football Association of Iceland alongside various other roles.

He received his honorary status in 2004 after also being awarded with the ISI's gold label in 1982 and their honour cross in 1996.

"The Board of Directors and staff of ISL recalls Fridjon with great warmth," an ISI statement said.

"He did invaluable work for ISI and the sports movement in his gentle and modest manner, which characterised all his work and interfaces.

"ISI sends out his surviving wife, family and family members sincere sympathy.
