Second-seeded German Yvonne Li has been eliminated from the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Russian Open in Vladivostok after suffering a first-round defeat at the hands of Japan’s Natsumi Shimoda.

Li lost 16-21, 22-24 on day two of the BWF Tour Super 100 event at Sport Hall Olympik.

Li was the only women’s singles seed to crash out at the first hurdle.

Top-ranked Kirsty Gilmour of Scotland overcame Ukraine’s Maria Ulitina 21-12, 24-22 to set up a meeting with Finland’s Airi Mikkela, a 21-11, 21-9 victor at the expense of Russia’s Ekaterina Khmelj.
