Such was the quality of the race in the 10th of the International Association of Athletics Federations Diamond League meetings this season that the naturalised Ethiopian, now running for the Netherlands, who holds the European title, had to give way to Kenya’s world record holder Hellen Obiri, who won in a meeting record of 14:20.36 that was also the fastest run this year.

Second place on the second day of this fixture went to Obiri’s compatriot Agnes Tirop in a personal best of 14:20.68.

Jamaica’s renascent Olympic 100m champion of 2008 and 2012, 32-year-old Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, won the women’s 100m in 10.78, just 0.05 off the 2019 world best time she shares with Rio 2016 champion and compatriot Elaine Thompson.

Britain’s European 100m and 200m champion Dina Asher-Smith was second in 10.92, with third going to world 100m and 200m silver medallist Marie-Josee Ta Lou of Ivory Coast, who clocked 10.98.

China’s Zhenye Xie produced a standout performance in one of the afternoon’s non-Diamond League scoring events, the men’s 200m, which he won in an Asian record of 19.88 from Britain’s Miguel Francis, who clocked a season’s best of 19.97.

Syria’s world high jump bronze medallist Majd Eddin Ghazal won with an effort of 2.30m from Qatar’s world champion Mutaz Essa Barshim, moving towards peak fitness after the serious ankle injury he suffered more than a year ago.

The Qatari, who is second on the all-time list of jumpers with a best of 2.43m, equalled his season’s best of 2.27m and will travel on in hope of retaining his world title on home soil later this year.

Sweden’s world discus silver medallist Daniel Stahl, who has been throwing more than 70m for fun this season, only needed 68.56m to win today, although that was a meeting record.

Fedrick Dacres of Jamaica, who has also bettered 70m this season, was second with 67.09m ahead of world champion Andrius Gudzius of Lithuania, who managed 65.40.

Germany’s European long jump champion Malaka Mihambo produced a meeting record of 7.02m to defeat four-times world champion and London 2012 gold medallist Brittney Reese of the United States, who had a best of 6.82. 

In other non-Diamond League events at the Muller International meeting, Samuel Tefera of Ethiopia won the Emsley Carr Mile in a personal best of 3:49.45, the fastest run this year, with Norway’s Filip Ingebrigtsen, the 2016 European 1500m champion, finishing second in 3:49.60, a national record.

Britain’s Jake Wightman took third place in a personal best of 3:52.02.

In the women’s 800m, Britain’s Lynsey Sharp won in a season’s best of 1min 58.61sec.
