Surfer Chelsea Tuach will carry her country's flag at the 2019 Pan American Games Opening Ceremony here with the Barbados Olympic Association (BOA) announcing a 31-strong team of athletes.

Tuach, named BOA's female athlete of 2018, is ninth in the World Surf League Women's Qualifying Series Ranking.

The 23-year-old booked a place at her debut Pan American Games after reaching the final of last December's Pan American Surfing Games in Punta Rocas.

She has prepared for competition here with victory in the women's South Africa Open of Surfing last month.

Tuach will be joined by 30 other Barbadian athletes, competing in aquatics, athletics, badminton, cycling, golf, sailing, shooting, taekwondo, tennis and triathlon.

This includes Shane Brathwaite, a bronze medallist at Toronto 2015, and five-times Olympic shooter Michael Maskell.

Also in the delegation are 15 officials, four medical team members and two journalists.

Barbados claimed three medals at Toronto 2015, including Brathwaite's bronze.

Ramon Gittens won a silver medal in the men's 100m and Akela Jones acheived bronze in the women's high jump.

The Opening Ceremony for this year's competition is due to take place on Friday (July 26) at Estadio Nacional.

Competition is scheduled to take place in 39 sports until August 11, with around 6,600 athletes expected to participate.
