International Surfing Association (ISA) President Fernando Aguerre has declared the organisation “proud” as the sport prepares to make its first appearance at the Pan American Games here in Lima.

Shortboard, longboard, stand up paddle (SUP) surfing and SUP racing will feature on the programme at the Games for the first time.

Surfing was added to the Lima 2019 programme days before the previous Pan American Games in Toronto, at a time when the sport was vying for inclusion at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The ISA ultimately succeeded in ensuring surfing would make its Olympic debut in Tokyo, while the sport is also set to feature at Paris 2024.

"The ISA is proud to see surfing make its highest-profile appearance yet in the Olympic Movement,” Aguerre said.

“Not only will fans around the world see the culture, energy and high performance of surfing, but they also will be treated with the inclusion of the surfing disciplines of stand up paddle surfing and racing, which will provide a new, youthful outlook to the event.

"The ISA led the charge for the inclusion of surfing and SUP in the 2019 Pan Am Games, as part of our plan for inclusion in the Olympic Games, which was approved in 2016 in Rio.

"Pan Am inclusion is a stepping stone and is surely indicative of the importance, popularity and value of surfing both within the Olympic Movement and in our oceans, lakes, and rivers around the world."

Lima 2019 will serve as a qualifier for Tokyo 2020, with the highest-ranked men’s and women’s athletes in the shortboard division earning Olympic places.

The destination of the quota place in each division will not be determined until the conclusion of the 2020 World Surfing Games and 2019 World Surf League Championship Tour.

The highest-placed athlete at Lima 2019, who has not yet qualified, will be awarded a place in 2020.

All the surfing events will run from July 29 to August 4 at Punta Rocas, south of Lima's city centre.

The venue staged the World Surfing Games in 2014.

The ISA have confirmed Argentina's Santiago Muñiz, Mexico's Jhony Corzo and Costa Rica's Noe Mar McGonagle as being among the World Surfing Games gold medallists who are set to compete in Peru’s capital city.

Longboard competition will feature home favourite Benoit Clemente, who won gold in the men’s event at last month’s World Championships.

Both shortboard and longboard surfing are due to feature from July 29 to August 4, while SUP will be held from July 31 to August 4.

SUP racing events will also feature on the final day of surfing competition at the Games.

Both the ISA and International Canoe Federation have staked claims to the ownership of SUP and have not been able to reach an agreement.

The long-running dispute will now be settled by the CAS.

Surfing will be one of 39 sports on the programme for the Pan American Games, which officially begin on Friday (July 26).

More than 6,500 athletes from 41 countries will compete across two weeks of competition.
