Naples' tourism industry was boosted by hosting the 2019 Summer Universiade, according to the International University Sports Federation (FISU).

Naples 2019 took place from July 3 to 14, with 6,000 athletes competing in 18 sports. 

And FISU has revealed the benefits the Italian city experienced from hosting the competition.

Hotel company Federalberghi claimed they had 90 per cent of all rooms booked in the first week of July.

This decreased in the second week of July but still exceeded 75 per cent, a five per cent increase on the same period last year.

Italian business association Confcommercio reported that takings grew by 200 per cent at the Corso Umberto and Via Toledo shopping centres during the Universiade.

Museums experienced a boost in visitors, with more than 20,000 people going to the Mann Museum to witness the “Paideia. Giovani e sport nell’antichità” exhibit. 

According to FISU, restaraunts and bars benefitted from the Universiade as well.

Even after the competition finished, more than 1,000 visitors decided to stay on in Naples. 

The next Summer Universiade is due to take place in Chengdu from August 8 to 19, 2021.
