United States’ hopes of retaining their crown at the World Baseball Softball Confederation Under-12 Baseball World Cup suffered a setback today.

The American youngsters were edged out 7-6 by the world's number nine side, Venezuela, in a Group B clash in Tainan, Chinese Taipei.

United States, who had eased past Australia 10-0 in their opening game, are aiming for a fourth title in a row.

However, they have work to do if they are to clinch a top-three berth and advance to the super round, where results will carry over, with the top two teams in this then contesting the final on August 4.

Asian under-12 champions Chinese Taipei roared to a 19-0 triumph against South Africa.

Japan got their second victory in as many games, recording a 6-0 win against Cuba, while Fiji suffered another crushing defeat as they were swept aside 30-1 by Czech Republic.
