Canada’s women will defend their Under-19 World Lacrosse title on home ground starting tomorrow as the seventh edition of this quadrennial competition gets underway at Peterborough in Ontario.

Action in an event sanctioned by World Lacrosse is due to take place and the Justin Chiu Stadium, concluding on August 10.

The last time the Women’s Championships, which began in 1995, were held at this venue, gold went to the United States after a defeat of Australia in the final.

That was number three out of four consecutive final victories for the US over the side that had beaten them to gold in the first final, which was held at Haverford in America.

Canada broke into that monopoly when the Championships were held in Edinburgh four years ago, beating the United States 9-8 in the final.

Australia and the United States are among 22 competing nations.

The field includes a team representing Haudenosaunee, a historically powerful north-east Native American tribe also known as the Iroquois.

An Iroquois National team finished third in the 2012 men’s Championship after beating England, who are also competing in Peterborough, 18-1.
