Women's top seed Chen Yufei has avoided the fate of many of the other top ranked players at the Thailand Open following another day of shocks at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Super 500 event.

Chinese Chen defeated Kim Ga-eun of South Korea 21-10, 21-16 to reach the quarter finals at the Huamark Indoor Stadium in Bangkok.

In the last eight she is set to play unranked Soniia Cheah Su Ya of Malaysia, one of three female players to eliminate a seeded opponent today.

Cheah beat Chinese fifth seed He Bingjiao 21-15, 21-12, while seventh seed Saina Nehwal and eighth ranked Sung Ji-hyun also fell.

India's Nehwal lost 16-21. 21-11, 21-14 to Sayaka Takahashi of Japan, while South Korean Sung went down 21-15, 21-19 to Thailand's Pornpawee Chochuwong.

Only two seeds remain in the women's draw - Chen and sixth ranked Ratchanok Intanon, who came from behind to beat Nitchaon Jindapol in an all-Thai encounter, 17-21, 21-11, 21-11.

There was also joy for the home fans in the men's singles as Indian fifth seed Srikanth Kidambi was beaten by Thailand's Khosit Phetpradab.

Unseeded Phetpradab came from behind to win in three sets, 11-21, 21-16, 21-12.

The other ranked men's players in action in round two won their matches - the highest seeded player left, number three Chou Tien-chen of Taiwan, beat Parupalli Kashyap of India 21-9, 21-14.

He is scheduled to play sixth seed Kenta Nishimoto in the quarter-finals after the Japanese defeated Prannoy HS 21-17, 21-10.

Seventh seed Kanta Tsuneyama of Japan is also through, beating Thailand's Sitthikom Thammasin in three sets, 18-21, 21-11, 21-12.

Competition is due to continue tomorrow with the men's and women's singles.
