The neighbours' rivalry is one of the fiercest in the sport and at the last World Championships in Scotland four years ago, it was Canada who took the honours in a 9-8 victory.

At Justin Chiu Stadium it was the US who won the latest battle as they dominated the second quarter to pull away for a 13-5 win.

It was a third successive Pool A triumph for the US, who progress to the knockout phase as the number one seeds.

"It was honestly an unreal match," US goalkeeper Rachel Hall said.

"You look at the stands and see so many people, and then playing for each other in front of them is fantastic. 

"It wasn’t like anything I’ve ever dreamed of."

In the pool's other match, another budding lacrosse rivalry saw England claim their first win in Peterborough with a 10-9 victory against Australia, who suffered their third consecutive defeat.

England's Hannah Thurston said: "I think Australia and England have always had a big rivalry, and I believe that the senior women had the same score/result in their World Cup, and in 2015 it was the same result for us.

"So, it’s always a target game for the two sides. 

"With it being such a great rivalry, it feels really great to be able to come out on top.”

In Pool C Germany won a fourth successive match in a narrow 7-6 victory against Kenya as China swept aside South Korea 22-9.

Puerto Rico's winning run in Canada continued as they cruised past Israel 20-1, while Pool E rivals Hong Kong made it two wins and two defeats by winning 21-2 against Belgium.

Wales earned their first victory in Pool B, winning 12-5 against Scotland, as Japan maintained their unbeaten start with a 13-6 triumph against New Zealand.

Czech Republic won 13-8 against Chinese Taipei as their perfect start continued in Pool D.
