Brazil's Marcelo Chierighini upgraded his Toronto 2015 Pan American Games men's 100 metre freestyle swimming bronze medal to gold after triumphing here at Lima 2019.

The 28-year-old recorded a time of 48.09secs to triumph at the VIDENA National Sports Complex aquatics centre.

In the process, he defeated five-times Olympic gold medallist Nathan Adrian of the United States, who finished second in 48.17.

Third place went to another American, Michael Chadwick, in 48.88.

Delfina Pignatiello of Argentina doubled her Lima 2019 medal haul after winning the women's 800m freestyle, having also topped the podium in the 400m.

The Youth Olympic silver medallist raced to victory with a time of 8:29.42, with the US’ Mariah Denigan touching 4.76 seconds later.

Brazil’s Viviane Eichelberger claimed the bronze medal in a time of 8:36.04.

Chierighini and Eichelberger were the only two non-Americans to win in the pool, with the US securing seven gold medals.

This included Anne Lazor and Daniel Carr, who both got their second gold of Lima 2019.

Lazor had already won the women’s 100m breaststroke, this time triumphing over double the distance.
