An educational initiative has been launched by the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) to help children with their reading.

FASANOC's "voices of the athletes champions" (VOA) are set to participate in the "reading like a champion scheme", which has already been rolled out at St Annes Primary School in Suva.

Famous Fijian athletes are set to visit the school in the Fijian capital to read to students in year three.

FASANOC revealed the initiative has been launched as part of an attempt to "make reading as interesting and fun as possible".

Footballer Naomi Waqanidrola and hockey player Tessa Harman are among the first Fijian athletes to take part in the scheme.

It is hoped it will be widened to include other schools in the Pacific nation.

"It is a project whereby we use athletes who have represented the country and are seen as role models to read story books to students," Jeegar Bhavsar, coordinator of the VOA programme, said.

"FASANOC's VOA champions are taking part in this for the first time and we would like to continue this project with other schools as well."
