German luger Dajana Eitberger will not compete in the 2019-2020 season, as she is due to give birth to her first child in February of next year.

The German Bobsleigh and Sled Sports Federation made the announcement regarding the women’s singles silver medallist from the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

Earlier this year, Eitberger moved from Thuringia to Munich, where her boyfriend lives.

After the baby break, she wants to celebrate her comeback in the season before the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

"I want to compete once more at the Olympic Games 2022," Eitberger, 28, said.

Eitberger is a two-time women's sprint bronze medallist at the World Championships.

Both were won on home ice, with the first in 2016 in Königssee and the second this year in Winterberg.

Eitberger was also the bronze medallist in the women's singles at her home European Championships in Oberhof in February.

She finished behind compatriots Natalie Geisenberger and Tatjana Hüfner, who announced her retirement at the end of last season.

Hüfner claimed three Olympic medals, including gold at Vancouver 2010.
