The American mixed 4x100 metres medley relay team broke the world junior record at the 2019 International Swimming Federation World Junior Championships in Budapest.

The quartet of Will Grant, Josh Matheny, Torri Huske and Gretchen Walsh triumphed in a time of 3min 44.84sec at the Hungarian capital's Duna Arena.

Russia’s Nikolay Zuev, Anastasia Makarova, Andrei Minakov and Ekaterina Nikonova finished second in 3:48.06, while Canada’s Jade Hannah, Gabe Mastromatteo, Joshua Ismael Liendo Edwards and Hanna Lynne Henderson came third in 3:48.20.

Victory secured the US the last of four gold medals today.

Among the three other winners was Carson Foster, who came out on top in the men’s 200m medley in a Championship record-breaking time of 1:58.46.

Canada’s Finlay Hugh Knox claimed silver in 1:59.44, while Greece’s Apostolos Papastamos took bronze in 1:59.62.

There were also US triumphs for Lillie Nordmann and Luca Urlando in the women’s 200m butterfly and men’s 200m freestyle events, respectively.

Nordmann touched home in 2:08.24 with Hungary’s Blanka Berecz second in 2:08.93 and fellow American Charlotte Hook third in 2:09.00.

A time of 1:46.97 proved good enough for Urlando, who was followed in the standings by Sweden’s Robin Hanson in 1:47.03 and Brazil’s Murilo Stein Sartori in 1:47.39.

Among today’s other stand-out performers were Italy’s Thomas Ceccon and Australia’s Lani Pallister, both of whom set Championship records in winning their respective events.

Ceccon claimed the men’s 100m backstroke title in 53.46, lowering his own Championship record of 54.07 set in yesterday's heats and finishing ahead of Russia’s Zuev in 53.59 and the US’s Wyatt Davis in 54.14.

Pallister, meanwhile, beat Japan’s Miyu Namba to top honours by a margin of 4.75 seconds, clocking a time of 8:22.49 in an event determined by fastest heat.

Italy’s Giulia Salin rounded off the podium in 8:28.99

There were also wins today for Italy’s Benedetta Pilato in the women’s 50m breaststroke, Russia’s Vladislav Gerasimenko in the men’s 100m breaststroke and Canada’s Hannah in the women’s 100m backstroke.

Pilato prevailed ahead of Great Britain’s Kayla Van der Merwe and the US’s Kaitlyn Dobler in 30.60, while Gerasimenko posted a time of 59.97 to hold off Americans Matheny and Kevin Houseman, and Hannah finished in 59.63 with the US’s Claire Curzan second and Russia’s Daria Vaskina third.
