Hungary's Balint Kopasz clinched gold in front of a home crowd at the International Canoe Federation Canoe Sprint World Championships in Szeged.

The home favourite surged to the front in the final quarter of the men's K1 1000 metres final to clinch gold in a time of 3min 36.07sec.

He finished 1.24 seconds clear of silver medallist Josef Dostál.

Portugal's defending champion Fernando Pimenta, who led for the majority of the race, faded to third in a time of 3:37.63.

Following Canada's multiple world champion Laurence Vincent-Lapointe being ruled out of the Championships following a positive drugs test, the women's C1 200m title was claimed by American teenager Nevin Harrison.

The 17-year-old clinched gold in a time of 49.30 in the Olympic distance event, just weeks after being crowned Pan American Games champion.

Russia's Olesia Romasenko finished runner-up in 49.74, with Belarus' Alena Nazdrova third in 49.99.

While Harrison's success saw the emergence of a young talent on the world stage, the women's K1 200m witnessed the continued dominance of one of the sport's established stars.

New Zealand's Lisa Carrington powered to a seventh world title in the event, with the double Olympic champion finishing in 39.39.

Olympic silver medallist Marta Walczykiewicz of Poland trailed Carrington by nearly two seconds, finishing second in 41.33.

Denmark's European champion Emma Jorgensen and Spain’s Teresa Portela tied for third place in 41.34.

The men's race saw Britain's Olympic champion Liam Heath clinch gold, crossing the line in a time of 34.86.

Serbia's Strahinja Stefanovic and defending world champion Carlos Garrote of Spain completed the podium, in 35.04 and 35.12 respectively.

Belarusians Volha Khudzenka and Maryna Litvinchuk earned gold for the second successive day in the women's K2 competitions.

Having won the non-Olympic 200m event yesterday, the duo triumphed in the Olympic distance 500m competition in a time of 1min 42.55sec.

Poland's Karolina Naja and Anna Pulawska were second in 1:43.34, while Slovenia's Špela Ponomarenko Janic and Anja Osterman took bronze in 1:44.21.

Hao Liu and Hao Wang won the men's C2 1000m event in 3:40.55, with the Chinese pairing followed by Cuba's Serguey Torres and Fernando Jorge in 3:41.46.

Brazil's Erlon Silva and Isaquias Queiroz placed third in 3:44.34.

The Championships, which offer Olympic quota places in several classes, conclude tomorrow.
