South Korea's Lee Na-young qualified for the singles semi-finals in first position as action begun at the World Bowling Women's Championship in Las Vegas.

The Asian Games gold medallist left her best for last as she recorded a huge score of 289 at the South Point Bowling Plaza in the American entertainment capital.

She had previously rolled scores of 237, 221, 204 and 223 before switching to a new ball.

Lee then managed a 236 before the massive 289 which left her on a combined 1,410 in first place.

"The pin action was not very good for me for the first four games, so I talked with my coach and we switched to a polished ball and it carried much better," said Lee.

"My coaches reminded me that I am a good player and I should just bowl with confidence."

Lee won team gold and individual bronze at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang.

She was followed into the semi-finals by Sweden's Sandra Andersson who rolled a big 267 in her final game to finish second on 1,401.

Two Americans ended third and fourth to also go through on home soil.

Shannon O'Keefe came third on 1,392 with her performance including a fine game of 279.

World number one Danielle McEwan claimed the last semi-final spot on 1,371.

The semi-finals will now be held on Thursday (August 29) with Lee taking on McEwan and Andersson facing O'Keefe.

Doubles action will begin in Las Vegas tomorrow.
