Double World Championship-winning head coach Jukka Jalonen has signed a new contract with Finland which keeps him in the job until May 2022.

The 56-year-old guided his country's men to glory at this year's World Championships in Slovakia in May, where they beat Canada 3-1 in the final in Bratislava.

This was Finland's first world title win since their success in 2011 which was also masterminded by Jalonen during his first spell in charge.

On that occasion they thrashed Sweden 6-1 in the final which also took place in Bratislava.

Finland's only other World Championship success was in 1995 so Jalonen has been at the helm for two of their three victories.

He will now work towards the 2022 World Championship, which Finland will host, and the Beijing Winter Olympics in the same year.

"Coaching a national team is an honour for any coach," he said.

"It's great to be able to work with the top players in your country at the international top level of the sport.

"Now there are tremendous events ahead with the pinnacle in 2022 with the Olympics and the World Championship."

Jalonen first joined the Finland set-up as assistant coach in 2007 before beginning a five-year spell in charge a year later.

He then coached Russian side SKA St Petersburg in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) before taking over Finland's under-20 side and leading them to home gold at the World Junior Championships in 2016.

His next assignment was with Finnish KHL side Jokerit Helsinki before he returned to the national team last year.

"Jukka Jalonen was our first choice and we are extremely pleased that an agreement was found," said Finnish Ice Hockey Association chairman Harri Nummela.

"This solution will bring continuity to the national team."

Jalonen will keep the same backroom staff with Mikko Manner and Antti Pennanen continuing as assistants.

Finland will welcome Czech Republic, Russia and Sweden for the Karjala Tournament in November with the defence of their world title taking place in Switzerland next year.
