Semianova claims record-breaking women's trap win at European Championship Shotgun

Russia's Daria Semianova was in record-breaking form as she claimed the women's senior trap gold medal at the European Championship Shotgun in Lonato del Garda in Italy.

The 17-year-old managed a total of 45 in the final at the Trap Concaverde shooting range, breaking the world junior record.

Home shooter Jessica Rossi finished second with 44, while San Marino's Alessandra Perilli rounded off the podium with 36.

The top six was completed by Italy's Silvana Stanco, compatriot Fiammetta Rossi and Spain's María Quintanal Zubizarreta.

In the women's junior trap final, Spain's Mar Molne Magrina prevailed with a total of 39.

Italy's Sofia Littame was the runner-up with 37 and Portugal's Maria Ines Coelho De Barros ranked third with 28.

Action in Lonato del Garda is due to continue tomorrow.

Medals will be awarded in the men's senior and men's junior trap competitions.

When British skaters Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean won the Olympic gold medal in ice dance at Sarajevo 1984 with 12 perfect 6.0s from every judge, for their interpretation of Maurice Ravel's Boléro, an important member of their team was singer-actor Michael Crawford. Crawford, who had played Frank Spencer in British sitcom Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em and the title role in the musical The Phantom of the Opera, had become a mentor to the pair in 1981 and went on to help them create their Olympic routine. Crawford said he “taught them how to act". He was present with their trainer Betty Callaway at the ringside at Sarajevo as they created one of the most iconic moments in Olympic history.
