Di Spigno leads Italian podium sweep in men's double trap at European Championship Shotgun

Daniele Di Spigno led an Italian one-two-three, as the host nation dominated the men's double trap at the European Championship Shotgun in Lonato del Garda.

The 44-year-old beat Ignazio Maria Tronca 7-6 in a shoot-off for the gold medal, after both managed a total of 133 at the Trap Concaverde shooting range.

Rounding off the podium was Andrea Vescovi with 128.

There was also success for Italy in the women's double trap competition, with Claudia de Luca coming out on top ahead of compatriot Sofia Maglio.

De Luca finished with a total of 124, while Maglio registered 107.

Belgium's Anne Focan took the bronze medal with 99.

There were only three shooters competing in the men's junior double trap event, all of which were Italian.

Jacopo Dupre de Foresta prevailed with a total of 128, followed by Marco Carli with 127 and Lorenzo Franquillo on 115.

When British skaters Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean won the Olympic gold medal in ice dance at Sarajevo 1984 with 12 perfect 6.0s from every judge, for their interpretation of Maurice Ravel's Boléro, an important member of their team was singer-actor Michael Crawford. Crawford, who had played Frank Spencer in British sitcom Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em and the title role in the musical The Phantom of the Opera, had become a mentor to the pair in 1981 and went on to help them create their Olympic routine. Crawford said he “taught them how to act". He was present with their trainer Betty Callaway at the ringside at Sarajevo as they created one of the most iconic moments in Olympic history.
