Defending champion Mohamed ElShorbagy maintained his unbeaten start to the season to reach the quarter-finals of the Professional Squash Association US Open Squash Championships in Philadelphia.

The world number two Egyptian has already won the China Open and Oracle NetSuite Open trophies this season, and remained on course for a third consecutive trophy in the PSA World Tour Platinum event.

He reached the last eight at Drexel University Daskalakis Athletic Center with an 11-6, 11-7, 12-10 victory against Campbell Grayson from New Zealand.

"I'm really happy to be back here in the quarters, the US Open is one of the most prestigious tournaments on the calendar," ElShorbagy said.

"It's a Platinum event and we all aim for these." 

In his 10th successive US Open quarter-final, ElShorbagy will take on another Kiwi in world number five Paul Coll.

Coll fought back from losing the first game against Egypt's Mazen Hesham to progress 6-11, 11-2, 12-10, 11-8.

Simon Rösner of Germany defeated Zahed Salem of Egypt 11-4, 11-7, 6-11, 11-7 to set up a last-eight clash with world number three Tarek Momen.

Momen won 11-5, 11-6, 12-10 against Rösner's compatriot Raphael Kandra in just 36 minutes.

World number one Ali Farag has progressed direct to the semi-finals after his quarter-final opponent, Miguel Rodriguez of Colombia, was forced to withdraw from the tournament.

There was home delight for United States number one Amanda Sobhy in the women's draw when she progressed to the quarter-finals.

As the only American left in the draw, Sobhy breezed past Indian Joshna Chinappa 12-10, 11-6, 11-7.

She will take on second seed Camille Serme of France, after the 2016 US Open champion won 11-8, 11-5, 9-11, 11-2 against Annie Au from Hong Kong.

World number five Nouran Gohar defeated Egyptian compatriot Salma Hany 11-2, 11-8, 11-3.

Tesni Evans from Wales completed the last-eight line-up with an 11-5, 11-5, 11-3 victory against Joey Chan from China.

The first of the quarter-finals in both the men's and women's draws are tomorrow, with the semi-final line-up to be completed on Friday (October 11).
