Ito overcame China’s Qian Tianyi 11-6, 11-7, 9-11, 11-8, 10-12, 11-7 to set up a clash with Monaco's Yang Xiaoxin, who was a surprise 7-11, 11-8, 11-9, 14-12, 15-13 victor at the expense of fifth-seeded Japanese Kasumi Ishikawa.

In the round of 16 in the men's singles event, top seed Xu Xin of China beat South Korea’s Lee Sangsu 11-7, 9-11, 11-7, 11-3, 10-12, 11-9

Standing between him and a place in the semi-finals is compatriot Yan An, who defeated fifth-seeded Brazilian Hugo Calderano 8-11, 11-9, 8-11, 7-11, 13-11, 11-7, 11-8.

Second-seeded Chinese Fan Zhendong is also through to the last eight after overcoming fellow Chinese Wang Chuqin 9-11, 11-4, 11-6, 13-11, 11-13, 14-12.

Next up for him is sixth-seeded home favourite Timo Boll, who claimed an 8-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-4, 7-11, 9-11, 12-10 win over Japan’s Jun Mizutani.

There was a shock elimination for third-seeded Chinese Lin Gaoyuan following a 5-11, 6-11, 11-9, 7-11, 9-11 loss to Germany's Patrick Franziska.

The home player's reward is an encounter with South Korea’s Jeoung Youngsik, an 11-6, 7-11, 11-8, 9-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-8 victor at the expense of ninth-seeded Japanese Koki Niwa.
