Nour El Sherbini of Egypt began her title defence of the Professional Squash Association (PSA) Women's World Championship with a routine victory in Cairo.

El Sherbini had not competed since winning the women's singles title at the World Championships in Chicago in March because of a knee injury.

Despite this, the 23-year-old eased past Rachael Chadwick of England 11-6, 11-5, 11-4 in front of the Giza Pyramids.

"I was really excited about today’s match and I just wanted to get on court and see how it goes, but it went really well," El Sherbini said.

"I was playing good and I’m really happy to be back.

"In the first game my knee was in my head a little bit, but I was running ok and it felt good.

"I didn’t have any problems and hopefully it is going to be like this the whole week."

She is due to continue her campaign for a fourth world title against Hollie Naughton of Canada, who overcame Egypt's Farida Mohamed 13-11, 10-12, 7-11, 11-4, 11-7.

Fellow Egyptian and top seed Raneem El Welily, seeking to regain the title she last claimed in 2016, defeated compatriot and wildcard Sana Ibrahim 11-3, 11-5, 11-4.

Her next opponent is set to be Olivia Blatchford Clyne of the United States, a 11-5, 11-6, 11-5 winner against Menna Hamed of Egypt.

World number three Camille Serme of France recorded a 11-6, 11-2, 11-2 win over Egyptian Salma Youssef, setting up a clash with Millie Tomlinson.

The English player defeated Lee Ka Yi of Hong Kong 9-11, 11-4, 9-11, 11-9, 11-8.

Competition is due to continue tomorrow.
