Russia topped the standings in three of the four events held on the opening day of the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) World Open Championships in Dubai.

Among the country's trio of winners at the United Arab Emirates city's Hamdan Sports Complex was Natalia Salnikova in the women's 52 kilograms category.

Salnikova finished with a total of 517.5kg and was followed in the final rankings by compatriot Aigul Sitdikova with 510.5kg, including a world record-breaking bench press of 160.5kg.

Ecuador's Vilma Ochoa Vargas completed the top three with 502.5kg.

There were also wins for Russia today in the men's 59kg and 66kg divisions, through Sergei Fedosienko and Sergey Gladkikh, respectively.

Fedosienko triumphed on 765kg, with Chinese Taipei's Lin Yi-Chun second on 710kg and India's P Suresh third on 665kg.

Gladkikh prevailed with a world record-breaking total of 820kg.

Indonesia's Viki Aryanto was the silver medallist with 787.5kg, while France's Hassan El Belghiti took the bronze with 780.5kg.

Widari Widari of Indonesia was crowned the world champion in the women's 47kg category.

She finished on the same total as runner-up Yukako Fukushima of Japan, with both managing 487.5kg.

Fukushima's fellow countrywoman Kotomi Hayakawa rounded off the podium with 425kg.
