World Football Cup 2020 to be held in Skopje

The Confederation of Independent Football Associations (CONIFA) has announced that the 2020 edition of the World Football Cup will be hosted by Skopje.

The capital of the Republic of North Macedonia is to stage the 16-team tournament between May 30 and June 7.

The draw will be held at the body's annual general meeting next month on the island of Jersey.

Sascha Duerkop, CONIFA general secretary, described Skopje as a "fantastic city with great facilities".

Sportsbet.io has already signed on as premier sponsor for the competition.

CONIFA describes itself as the football federation for all associations outside FIFA.

The third CONIFA World Football Cup last year was held in and around London, featuring teams such as Tibet, Matabeleland and Tuvalu.

Kárpátalja in eastern Europe, also known as Carpathian Ruthenia, and regarded by some as the shortest-lived state in history, lifted the trophy, beating Northern Cyprus on penalties in the final.

When British skaters Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean won the Olympic gold medal in ice dance at Sarajevo 1984 with 12 perfect 6.0s from every judge, for their interpretation of Maurice Ravel's Boléro, an important member of their team was singer-actor Michael Crawford. Crawford, who had played Frank Spencer in British sitcom Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em and the title role in the musical The Phantom of the Opera, had become a mentor to the pair in 1981 and went on to help them create their Olympic routine. Crawford said he “taught them how to act". He was present with their trainer Betty Callaway at the ringside at Sarajevo as they created one of the most iconic moments in Olympic history.
