Breakdancing, karate, surfing, sport climbing and skateboarding have been confirmed as the additional sports on the programme for the 2022 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, following approval from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board.

Surfing and skateboarding will make their Youth Olympic debut at the Games in the Senegalese capital, while breakdancing, sport climbing and karate return having featured at Buenos Aires 2018.

Four of the five - all excluding karate - are due to be part of the programme at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris.

Beach wrestling, beach canoeing and coastal rowing are among the other disciplines set to feature at the Youth Olympics for the first time.

IOC sports director Kit McConnell said the changes to the traditional format of the respective sports were made to "adapt to the local environment" in Dakar.

Skateboarding effectively replaces roller speed skating, while youth-orientated events such as hockey 5s, futsal and 3x3 basketball keep their places.

Acrobatic gymnastics and trampolining have been dropped after being included at Buenos Aires 2018.

Boxing has been included, despite the suspension of the Olympic recognition of the International Boxing Association (AIBA).

It is possible AIBA - stripped of its status as the Olympic governing body for the sport in June owing to severe issues with its governance, finances and refereeing and judging - will not have any involvement in the organisation of boxing at Dakar 2022.

McConnell said the IOC would "see what happens" with AIBA, which cannot be reinstated until after next year's Olympic Games in Tokyo at the earliest, but stressed boxing would feature at Dakar 2022 "one way or another".

This could include enlisting the help of an external company such as PricewaterhouseCoopers, appointed to oversee the credibility of the boxing competitions at Buenos Aires 2018.

AIBA's progress towards reinstatement is being assessed by an IOC Monitoring Committee, while the IOC has taken over the running of the sport at Tokyo 2020.

The IOC has also scrapped mixed National Olympic Committee events after some caused confusion for athletes and spectators at last year's Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires.

Mixed events involving athletes from the same country will remain, however.

The sports programme for Dakar 2022, the first Olympic event to be held in Africa, includes 239 events, the same figure as Buenos Aires 2018.

The number of sports at Dakar 2022 - 33 - is one more than last year's Games.

No demonstration sports have been confirmed but it is feasible they could be added at a later date, depending on proposals from the Organising Committee.

All sports and events will also be gender equal.

The amount of athletes has been increased from 4,000 to 4,564 after the IOC approved the two-wave system which will be in operation at the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne.

It will see athletes competing in the first half of the Games leave the Athletes' Village at the halfway stage before those participating in events in the second half of the week arrive to take their place.

McConnell claimed the Dakar 2022 programme moves the Youth Olympics more towards an "elite pathway" for major events at senior and junior level.

"The Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2022 will be the first Olympic event on the African continent which is historic for Senegal and historic for the continent of Africa," IOC President Thomas Bach said.

"The agreed athlete competition is youthful and completely gender-balanced and shows that the IOC continues to develop the Youth Olympic Games that will feature over 4,500 athletes from all NOCs."
