In keeping with the tradition dating back to the original Olympic Games in Ancient Olympia in 776 BC, the resolution will aim to ensure a halt to all hostilities, allowing the safe passage and participation of athletes and spectators for the Olympic and Paralympic Games at Tokyo 2020. 

It will be formally submitted by the Government of Japan in close collaboration with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Paralympic Committee and Tokyo 2020. 

Tokyo 2020 President Yoshirō Mori is due to introduce it to the UN General Assembly at 10am with a speech, followed by discussions by the Member States and remarks by IOC President Thomas Bach.

Inspired by the Ancient Games, the IOC revived the Olympic Truce in 1992, and it is now introduced for each edition of the Games.

But a planned address to the UN by a refugee athlete has been called off due to a scheduling conflict, Japanese agency Kyodo News reported.

It had been intended to support the Olympic message of peace promoted by Bach.

Yiech Pur Biel, a member of the Refugee Olympic Team at Rio 2016, had been lined up to speak before the UN but he has now been stood down because of the number of speeches planned already.

The 800 metres runner had fled from his home in war-torn South Sudan to the Kakuma Refugee Camp in neighboring Kenya when he was a child.

Now 24, he hopes to compete again for the Refugee Team at Tokyo 2020.
