The number is three times more than were requested during the same period for the 2012 Paralympics in London and far exceeds the 2.3 million tickets available for the Games in the Japanese capital. 

"I am ecstatic, this is completely unprecedented and proves the huge interest there is for the Paralympics in Tokyo and Japan," International Paralympic Committee President Andrew Parsons said. 

"It shows we are on course for the best Paralympics yet,

"It will be hugely motivating for the Para athletes to compete in front of packed stadiums and to see how an entire country embraces the Paralympic Games in such a unique and fantastic way.

"I have said it before and will repeat it again; I am certain Tokyo 2020 will produce the biggest transformational impact on society than any of the previous editions of the Paralympic Games."

Around 600,000 tickets were purchased in the first Paralympic ticket lottery with the next one set to open on January 15 and run for two weeks until January 29. 

Tickets for all sports are being offered by Tokyo 2020 at, what they claim,are affordable prices and are aimed at encouraging people to attend with her family and friends.

Seats at competitive events will be priced from just JPY 900  ¥900 (£6.50/$8.50/€7.50) and will cost no more than JPY 7,000 (£50/$64.50/€58). 

Tickets for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies will cost from JPY 8,000 (£57/$74/€66) up to JPY 150,000 (£1,070/$1,380/€1,240).

"The interest in the Games is a result of the fantastic work by Tokyo 2020, National Government, Tokyo Metropolitan Government, media and partners," Parsons said.
