The United States’ boxing team for next year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo is closer to being named following the conclusion of trials in Lake Charles in Louisiana.

A total of 27 boxers advanced from the trials, which started on December 7 and were spread across nine days.

Among them was women’s flyweight Virginia Fuchs, considered to be among the US’s best medal hopes at Tokyo 2020.

Fuchs, a 2018 world bronze medallist, won her second straight trials title.

Four years ago, she failed to secure her spot at the Rio 2016 Olympics in international qualifiers.

Also progressing from the trials was men’s lightweight Keyshawn Davis, the 2019 world silver medallist.

He triumphed at the trials after his scheduled final opponent missed the bout for medical reasons.

None of the more than 100 boxers who competed at trials, held at the Lake Charles Civic Center and the Golden Nugget Lake Charles Hotel, had Olympic experience.

Every finalist from the eight men’s divisions and five women’s divisions will go into next year with a chance of qualifying for Tokyo 2020.

Super heavyweight Richard Torrez Jr, who missed the trials with a medical exemption, is also still in the running.

A training camp and international tournament next month will determine the one boxer per division who will then compete internationally for an Olympic berth.

The Olympic Qualifying Tournament for the Americas, due to take place in Buenos Aires from March 26 to April 3 and a World Olympic Qualifying Tournament, scheduled to be held in Paris from May 13 to 24, are the two changes for boxers to secure a Tokyo 2020 berth.

The other male boxers who advanced from the trials were: flyweights Abraham Perez and Anthony Herrera, featherweights Bruce Carrington and David Navarro, lightweight Ernesto Mercado, welterweights Delante "Tiger" Johnson and Freudis Rojas Jr, middleweights Joseph Hicks and Javier Martinez, light heavyweights Rahim Gonzales and Atif Oberlton, heavyweights Jamar Talley and Darius Fulghum, and super heavyweights Antonio Mireles and Jeremiah Milton.

Completing the women's list are flyweight Christina Cruz, featherweights Lupe Gutierrez and Andrea Medina, lightweights Rashida Ellis and Amelia Moore, welterweights Oshae Jones and Briana Che, and middleweights Naomi Graham and Morelle McCane.
