Australian Adam Scott has not ruled out competing in the golf event at Tokyo 2020, despite recently questioning the need for the sport to be included at the Olympic Games.

Scott, a former world number one, looks sure to be eligible to participate at the Games after winning his first title in four years at the Australian Professional Golfers' Association event last Sunday (December 22) and moving up to 13th in the world rankings.

Speaking after the tournament, Scott remained open to the idea of playing in Tokyo even though he skipped the Rio 2016 Games – where golf made a return after a 112-year absence - and more recently said he didn’t see the need for golf to be an Olympic sport.

"I'm just going to take my time and see,” he said.

"I mean, I've made it clear it's not my priority, but I wouldn't rule it out.

"You always have to stay open minded; I just don't want to hastily say 'no' or be silly based off more emotion.

"I know it is going to be a very successful event in Japan because the Japanese love golf."

But Scott told the Australian Associated Press three weeks ago: "I still question strongly why (the Olympics are) there; I don't see the need.

"It was incredibly disappointing that it was just a 72-hole stroke (play event); I think there could have been so much done with it.

"I don't think we're getting the most out of it, for a sport that is certainly not struggling at the professional level."
