Italy's Frank Chamizo, Viktor Lorincz of Hungary and Tamyra Mensah of the United States have been named United World Wrestling (UWW) Wrestlers of the Year for 2019 in the Greco-Roman, freestyle and women's categories, respectively.

Each winner claimed 30,000 CHF (£23,500/$31,000/€27,600) in prize money, while second-place finishers earned 20,000 CHF (£15,700/$20,500/€18,500), with those in third receiving 10,000 CHF (£7800/$10,300/€9,200).

The award winners in this annual UWW competition were selected based on performances in this year's Ranking Series events, continental championships and World Championships.

Award winners did not have to be world champions, which was a change from last year, when the winners were Peter Bacsi of Hungary in Greco-Roman, David Taylor of the United States in freestyle and Petra Olli of Finland in women's wrestling,

Chamizo, a 2016 Olympic bronze medallist and 2015 world champion, captured his third world medal, earning silver at 74kg in Nur-Sultan.

In April, he won his third European title at his third different weight class with an 8-0 victory over France's Zelimkhan Khadjiev.

"I'm happy, but I'm not 100 per cent happy," Chamizo said.

"I'm eighty per cent happy because I wanted to be world champion - my job is to be world champion."

World champions J'den Cox of the United States and Geno Petriashvili of Georgia were second and third, respectively, in the freestyle standings.

Lorincz, a three-time world medallist, won gold medals in three Rankings Series events this year and went on to take bronze at the European Games in Minsk, silver at the World Championships and gold at the World Military Games.

"I'm very excited to receive this award," Lorincz said.

World champion Shinobu Ota of Japan finished in second place with 88 points, while Zhan Beleniuk of Ukraine and Musa Evloev of Russia tied for third.

Mensah capped off a dominant year by winning a world title in women's wrestling at 68kg with a convincing 8-2 win in the gold-medal match over Jenny Fransson of Sweden.

The 27-year-old American outscored her opponents in Nur-Sultan by a combined score of 44-4.

Mensah also won gold medals this year at the Pan American Games and Pan American Championships.

"That makes me feel so appreciated," Mensah said.

"Yeah, I'm doing it for certain reasons, but for me to actually get more money out of it, that's incredible."

Aisuluu Tynybekova, who became the first Kyrgyzstan wrestler to win a senior world title, finished in second place with 94 points and Aline Rotter Focken of Germany was third with 87 points.

The 2020 Ranking Series, which will influence seeding for the Tokyo 2020 Games, starts with an event in Rome from January 15 to18.

A second Rankings Series event will be held from June 4 to 7 in Warsaw, one month after the final Olympic qualification tournament in Sofia.

The wrestling competition at the 2020 Olympic Games will take place from August 2 to 8 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan.
