It was a memorable day for David Gleirscher at the fourth International Luge Federation (FIL) World Cup of the season.

The Austrian finally claimed his maiden victory in the Viessmann Luge World Cup, in the Saxon town of Altenberg, Germany.

It's nearly two years since his 2018 Olympic Games victory in PyeongChang, and the 25-year-old finished ahead of Italy's Dominik Fischnaller.

"It is such a great feeling to follow up my Olympic victory with a World Cup win," Gleirscher said.

"I am delighted that I finally was able to show that I can be the fastest slider on a World Cup weekend.

"It's great for my confidence going into the season's major races at the World and European Championships."

World Cup leader Roman Repilov from Russia botched his first run and finished in 22nd at the halfway point.

The 2017 World Championship silver medallist set the best time of the second run to eventually finish 10th.

However, Repilov retains his lead in the overall standings on 466 points, with spint world champion Jonas Müller of Austria in second on 385, despite finishing last after making a mistake on his final run.

Fischnaller is third (350), ahead of Germany's Felix Loch (327).

The women's competition and team relay takes place tomorrow.
